1. Select what you're trading

   Select what you’re trading from the dropdown – stocks, options, spread-betting (and FX coming soon!).

2. Control your Risk

   The two things you must control in every trade are the amount you risk and the amount you spend on the trade.

   Many people don't even know the difference between their "risk" and "spend" when it comes to a trade.

   Risk is the amount you can realistically lose on a trade. For the most part, with the use of stop-loss orders you can control your risk. Spend is the amount of money you actually spend on a trade.

   So, let's start with Risk:

   
   

   Enter your trading capital and the percentage amount you want to risk per trade. The risk per trade is the difference between your entry point and your stop. 1-3% is recommended. So, if you have $10,000 trading capital, your maximum risk on a trade would be $300 if you input 3%.

   • The calculator will tell you how much you can risk on any trade.

3. Manage what you Spend

   Enter the percentage amount of your trading capital you want to spend on any trade. This is different to risk. This figure is the amount of your trading capital you want to deploy on any trade. So, if you have $10,000 trading capital and want to deploy 10% on any one trade, you’ll be able to spend $1,000 on that trade.

   • The calculator will tell you how much you can spend on any trade.
     
     (The calculator will take the most conservative figure from your risk and spend inputs to calculate the maximum number of shares, contracts or points you should trade.)

4. Trade Entry

   Input the entry price for your trade, together with your profit target and stop loss.

   • The calculator will tell you the maximum number of shares, contracts or points you should trade, according to your risk and spend parameters.

5. Trade Exit

   First Exit

   Enter your first exit price to take your profits, and the number of shares you want to close out.

   • The calculator will show your P&L so far, and your P&L per share, point or contract.

   Second Exit

   Enter your second exit price. The calculator will work out the number of shares, contracts or points you have left.

   • The calculator will show your P&L for your second exit, and your P&L per share, point or contract.
   • You'll also see your:
     • total P&L figures
     • net spend
     • reward ratio, and
     • % at risk.
